Rose and Sons
If you've missed Anthony Rose's comfort food since he departed from The Drake Hotel earlier this year, not to worry, he's back with his own place - Rose and Sons. The cozy restaurant occupies the former People's Foods diner on Dupont, just West of Davenport. For the first few weeks, only breakfast, lunch, and our favourite combination of the two were being served while Anthony and crew waited for their liquor license (dinner service is set to start Thursday). Mr. Rose says this was an opportunity for people in the neighbourhood to get familiar with the restaurant and for the team to test things out.
Well, it has definitely worked. Lines have been spotted out front and dishes like the blueberry bread pudding are popping up on the instagram and twitter feeds of Torontonians in the know. The pudding comes covered in wild blueberries, with the bread soaked in a sweet syrup. Wanting to savour the entire thing, it was almost impossible to not inhale it within a few minutes of it being put down. It's actually perfect to share. Other dishes we tried included the turkey hash with a fried egg, the three eggs with schmaltz hash, toast and bacon, and the maple gritz.
The tables in the middle of the restaurant are communal, and with the space being so tight, be prepared to make new friends. Also be prepared to practice your penmanship. Each table is equipped with a note pad where you write down your orders.
Like his website states, we're just happy Anthony is back to doing what he does best - 'comfort food with lots of loving.'
